Electronics giant Sony corp. will sell its PC and laptop arm to a local Japanese investment firm.while announcing its financial results for Q3 2013, It comes to a decision of selling it’s VAIO brand to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) and has decided to focus on smartphones and tablets.The deal will be set by the end of March 2014.
Although the company has significant profit improvements from increased sales in its mobile arm,it faced a net loss of ¥110 billion ($1.1 billion) for the year to the end of March.Sony introduced VAIO into the PC market in 1996.The Company is also planning to cut a total of 5,000 jobs worldwide (1,500 in Japan and 3,500 overseas) by the end of the 2014.The new PC company is looking to that around 300 Sony employees in design, development manufacturing and sales departments.Other products such as PlayStation4 was in great rush and sold over 4 million units and 9.7 million games in its first six weeks. There’s also been a rapid increase in PlayStation Plus subscriptions – (Multiplayer subscription which is mandatory ).
The company stated that it is splitting TV arm it into a standalone unity.Sony President and CEO Kazuo Hirai addressed in an earnings conference. “By splitting out the TV business, its management speed will be accelerated and responses to markets will be speedier.”My mission is to achieve a turnaround of the electronics business and to further grow it to contribute to the Sony group as a whole.To fulfill that task is my mission.”Kazuo Hirai said.
